YOGA ANATOMY

The subject of human anatomy holds an endless fascination for many of us, yet its study can easily become a frustrating process of memorizing, and then quickly forgetting countless details. Yoga provides a singular opportunity to the anatomy student because it shows us which details are important to focus on, and integrates those details into a unified vision of human existence. It is the specific intention of this course to provide a creative and engaging learning environment that will make the course material a living, breathing part of our personal and professional lives.

This course provides a practical grounding in the essentials of the anatomy and physiology of yoga practice with a particular emphasis on the relationship between breathing and healthy spinal function.

The ABC's

THE APPLICATION OF BREATH-CENTERED YOGA

The Application of Breath Centered Yoga comprises the second part of The Breathing Project's core curriculum. Building upon the material he covers in his Yoga Anatomy course, Leslie teaches the dynamics of a non-standardized, adaptable, breath centered approach to Yoga. Through experience, practice, discussion and exchange students will learn how to:

  • Cutomize yoga practice for individuals and groups of people
  • Use Breathing in relationship to movement and stillness as the foundation of yoga practice
  • Read the body to identify patterns of holding and tension
  • Sequence asana in a adaptable contextualized manner
  • Adapt and modify asana to maximize benefit and minimize risk of injury
  • Learn hands-on assists from an anatomically-informed breath-centered perspective
  • Explore classic yoga philosophy with anatomical understanding of the human system
  • Clarify teaching language for clear communication
  • Explore the use of pranayama, visualization and sound

In addition, some ABC sessions will be conducted as "Yoga Clinc" in which we will discuss and review case studies of specific individuals with chronic and acute health conditions

You don’t have to be a teacher, nor even desire to become a teacher to attend this course. Your Yoga practice will reach new heights as you become more grounded and peaceful through this ancient practice.

Leslie has also helped to organize international yoga conferences while serving as Vice-President of Unity in Yoga, and was part of the ad-hoc committee that established national standards for yoga teacher training. Prior to the formation of  The Yoga Alliance, Leslie was a strong voice in the ensuing national debate regarding the application of those certification standards. This dialogue resulted in the creation of e-Sutra, an influential e-mail list and blog that has an active worldwide membership.

WHAT IS RATIONAL YOGA?

Leslie’s work has been evolving a rational — non-mystical — approach to Yoga and Yoga Therapy. Leslie uses the immediate reality of human anatomy as a starting point for exploring issues of support and release, stability and freedom, space and boundaries. This process clarifies and validates much traditional wisdom while exposing many long-standing misconceptions and myths.

By relating fundamental yogic concepts to their anatomical origins, Leslie's approach resolves many doctrinal and philosophical differences between schools of Yoga.
